Dog owners told 'go straight to vet' if they spot sign after walk

As autumn weather takes hold across Britain, veterinarians are bracing for a surge in mushroom poisoning incidents amongst dogs. November marks the peak period for dangerous wild fungi, with damp conditions creating perfect breeding grounds in gardens, parks and woodland areas.

Just a tiny nibble of the wrong mushroom can trigger catastrophic illness or prove fatal for dogs, with treatment potentially costing owners between £800 and more than £3,000 in emergency veterinary fees.

Michael Nelson, canine expert at outdoor dog kennel distributor, Kennel Store, explained: "Every year, vets see a spike in mushroom poisonings around November. The combination of wet ground and mild temperatures causes fungi to flourish almost overnight. Even experienced foragers can't always tell safe and toxic species apart, so the only safe approach is to treat all wild mushrooms as dangerous."

The expensive price of inquisitiveness

Canines that consume poisonous mushrooms can fall critically ill within hours, although some symptoms may take several days to manifest. In extreme circumstances, liver failure or death may occur if medical intervention is postponed.

Signs of poisoning in dogs

Vomiting, diarrhoea, or excessive drooling

Abdominal pain or collapse

Seizures or confusion

Jaundice or yellowing of the eyes and gums

Mr Nelson cautioned: "If you suspect your dog has eaten a wild mushroom, contact your vet immediately, don't wait for symptoms to develop. Quick action can be the difference between recovery and tragedy. If it's safe, take a photo or sample of the mushroom to help with diagnosis."

How to safeguard your dog from poisoning

Keep dogs on a lead in wooded or grassy areas where mushrooms are prevalent

Stay vigilant in parks and gardens, as fungi can sprout overnight following rainfall

Remove any mushrooms from your garden as soon as you notice them

Consider using a muzzle for dogs that have a tendency to scavenge during walks

Mr Nelson advised: "With the financial and emotional toll of mushroom poisoning cases rising every November, a few moments of vigilance could save your dog's life and save you a hefty vet bill."
